The 2018 budget is missing the mark when it comes to supporting UK care homes, says Novacare | recruit

Following Philip Hammond’s promise to provide a further £650m in funding for the social care sector in the 2018 budget, the care home recruitment software solution, Novacare | recruit says that the amount falls short of what’s required to provide a long-term solution to the current UK care crisis.

The funding may stave off a collapse of the UK care sector for now, but it does little to address the key issues facing care homes and care providers.

The fundamental problems noted by care professionals are the failure to attract good quality candidates to the industry due to poor salaries and the ever-increasing workloads, a failure to recognise dementia as a health issue and a lack of plans to merge the NHS health care and social care systems.

It also fails to set aside funding to provide UK care homes with new technologies, such as AI robots to provide vital interactions with residents, and robotic lifting devices that will help safeguard the well-being of staff and help assist them in their day to day duties.

Many of these technologies have been trialled overseas with excellent results, so the UK government is falling short in their adoption of these new advancements to provide a better quality of care to residents and help provide vital support to overwhelmed care home staff.

A specialist recruitment software solution for the care sector, Novacare | recruit is made up of care industry experts with decades of experience in the health and social care industry including nurses, care home managers and care providers.

Stephen Wilson from Novacare | recruit said “After speaking to managers of UK care homes, it’s clear that the funding set aside for the care sector in the 2018 budget doesn’t go far enough to tackle the key issues that are crippling the industry.

“We firmly believe that funding for technology, training and smarter, streamlined processes are the key to taking the burden away from the already overwhelmed care home staff and to attract and engage new talent to an industry that is on the brink of disaster due to poor staffing levels and lack of government funding and support.”
