Reopening of Silk Road Positive Step for UK Economy, According to Materials Handling Experts

As the first ever train to use the old Silk Roads set off from the UK last week, Midland Pallet Trucks, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of pallet trucks, lift platforms and drum loaders, has welcomed this huge boost for the British economy as the Brexit negotiations begin.

The train, which signals the start of a regular service, has brought an air of optimism over the UK economy after the triggering of Article 50 and the subsequent scepticism over trade deals. And according to the company’s managing director, the trains’ departure will have settled many sceptics.

Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Midland Pallet trucks, said, “This new mode of export has opened up many more doors for the UK and UK businesses. Providing a cost-effective means of import and export to one of the most successful economies in the world, it will really cement the UK’s place as a major player in the business world – and hopefully encourage businesses to stay, or even come, to the UK.”

Cheaper than sending freight by air or sea, the train is loaded with British goods, including whisky and pharmaceuticals. Essentially opening up a new international route for exports with the world’s second largest economy, it provides an excellent alternative for moving large volumes of goods over long distances faster.

Coming just three months after the first freight service from China to the UK arrived in London as part of the revival of the ancient Silk Road, the train is being transported via the Channel Tunnel on a route which will take it through France, Belgium, Germany, and Poland, before leaving Europe and heading to Belarus, Russia, and Kazakhstan, and reaching its final destination in eastern China at the end of the month.

Beginning the 7500 mile journey from Stanford-le-Hope in Essex to Yiwu in China, the train is due to arrive just 17 days later – on Thursday 27 April.

Midland Pallet Trucks has one of the largest ranges of warehouse and materials handling equipment and accessories available to purchase online. Although import and export plays a huge role in global businesses, the importance of investing in strong and reliable equipment throughout a company cannot be underestimated.
