1 DOG AT A TIME RESCUE UK LAUNCHES NEW FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE ‘HAPPYS HEROES’ TO SUPPORT ITS MISSION IN ROMANIA

Dogs in Romania often live a tough and terrifying existence in brutal conditions, with many left to die in the street or dumped like household rubbish.  The British charity, 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK is dedicated to recruiting new human and canine heroes to join its mission and help fund changes to a dedicated rescue centre, Happys that it purchased in Bistrita, Romania two years ago.

Whether abandoned on the streets, isolated with untreated illnesses or tracked down by dog catchers, this harsh environment for Romanian dogs is something 1 Dog At A Time is working to combat. The charitable organization helps dogs live happier, healthier lives, with its half-way house dedicated sanctuary, Happy Tails. The sanctuary gives rescued dogs a safe, warm place to stay with regular meals and lots of TLC while they adapt to life off the streets in preparation for finding their new forever homes in the UK and Europe.

This great work is only made possible by the fantastic volunteers on the ground, and that’s why1 Dog At A Time Rescue is launching the Happy’s Heroes initiative. For just £10 a month, canine friends in the UK and further afield can become registered heroes – helping their fellow dogs get back on their feet.

“We not only take care of practicalities, like making sure dogs are fully vaccinated, with a pet passport and neutering, but we give them space to recover from the stress of their ordeal, too,” says Jayne Watts, Founder of 1 Dog At A Time Rescue UK. “Without our volunteers and supporters, we wouldn’t be able to help the dogs.”

Over the last six months, a range of improvements have been made to Happys in Bistrita including installing heating to keep the dogs comfortable and special paint for the walls and floors which is more hygienic than regular coverings. The rescue plans to make additional improvements, such as building larger kennels specifically for mums and pups – which are commonly dumped – an isolation and quarantine area for the most vulnerable, an outdoor play area and veterinary centre along with accommodation for visitors and volunteers.

The new fundraising initiative will help to finance these works and maintain the shelter.

As a thank you for joining Happy’s Heroes, each dog will receive their own unique Happy’s Hero Medal, designed to reflect the nobility and character the wearer holds. Committing to a monthly donation helps put right the injustice which these Romanian street dogs face, turning their lives around and putting them on the path to a wonderful new forever home where they can be loved, valued and cared for.
