2020 gift trends set to see a big focus on furry family members

The start of a new year and a new decade will also see the beginnings of some new gifting habits with the furry members of the family in particular set to take centre stage – according to research by leading gift retailer, GiftPup.

The personalised gifts experts have studied purchase habits across all gift categories and picked out several key trends which will influence how we choose gifts and what we give to loved ones in 2020. The biggest emerging trend identified from sales data was a surge in gifts being purchased for four-legged family members, with presents for pets set to be the biggest change to consumer gifting habits across the next 12 months.

Emily Ford, GiftPup product manager said, “Our research indicates that households are increasingly including their pets in gift giving and we expect that this will continue to grow. In the second half of this year, our most popular emerging products have been largely pet-based, with our rustic luxury wooden pet beds, the double dog feeding station and dog paw piped edge photo cushion, which has seen a 210% grown, all extremely popular. In fact, out top 10 best selling products overall show an increasing focus on furry family members, something we haven’t seen in previous years.”

In addition to pet gifting, GiftPup also expects practical, personalised homewares to trend in 2020. Its first home doormat has soared in popularity by almost 40% in the lead up to the New Year, potentially driven by people cashing in on the help to buy ISAs. Small photo cushions have also registered 197% growth, while the large version has increased by almost 80%.

Ford adds, “Looking at the data and shopper behaviour habits, we expect homewares to be a key consideration for those searching for thoughtful, meaningful gifts. It’s interesting that many of our best-selling pet items are also décor related, with our wooden pet beds for example designed to be much more attractive and part of the home than the standard fabric or leather dog bed.
