African-inspired fashion label hits £5million sales after starting with £50

Twin sisters Christelle and Michelle Nganhou are celebrating success after their African clothing company, Grass-Fields tops £5million sales, following its launch on a £50 budget.

After becoming disillusioned with the strict dress codes often imposed in UK offices, and wanting to combine her love of African-inspired dress with her impressive business acumen, Christelle and her sister returned to Cameroon with just £50 in their pocket and a dream to create an ethical, stylish and colourful clothing brand.

Fast forward five years and that dream has been realised with a stunning new collection for summer and a five million pound turnover. The sisters are now the proud owners of Grass-Fields, a design duo that creates a range of modern African print dresses and clothing for women, men and children all sourced and made in the UK and Cameroon.

Christelle Nganhou, Director of Grass-Fields said “After attending several interviews and being complimented on my attire, I was always very disappointed to be told about the strict dress codes I’d have to adhere to if I accepted the role.

“I love the vibrancy and vitality of African inspired clothing, so together with my sister we filled a gap in the market by coming up with our first line of clothing with just £50 and we’ve not looked back since.”

A vibrant fusion of engaging prints combined with current Western clothing trends and a traditional African twist, Grass-Fields has enjoyed significant success since that original £50 investment.  The sisters now manage their highly profitable business and continually design covetable new pieces which have resonated with fashionistas around the world.

From headwraps featuring tropical colour combinations to stunning maxi-dresses and beautifully tailored shirts for men plus an entire range for fashion-conscious kids, each Grass-Fields product is made using ethically sourced, high quality fabrics.

Christelle continues, “I’m actually grateful for those interview experiences, because without them Grass-Fields would never have been born and we wouldn’t be able to provide our customers with the biggest, boldest prints and an exciting shopping experience.”
