British design house add quintessential flair to American classic with new Umibelt launch

An American classic meets quintessential British design this month with the launch of a stylish new multi-functional modular belt for adventurers, creatives and makers. Designed to hold the Leatherman multi-purpose tool in a modular buckle, the Umibelt stores and conceals thanks to a clever mag lock buckle.

Created for the big city and the great outdoors, the Umibelt is the brainchild of British design house MaccaMakes. The unique mag lock belt buckle system works on a push and lock principle, offering safe and easy storage of six different Leatherman multi-tools. The tool slides into the buckle and is then locked in place by a neodymium magnet, holding the DIY essential securely through the day with no unsightly bulges or protruding pockets. It turns the Leatherman into an occasional piece into something that is easy to carry everyday.

A single natural movement releases the tool from its sleek storage with a simple thumb swipe, giving quick access for cutting, carving, screwing and opening, whether the wearer is building a boat, fixing a shelf or pitching a tent in the wilderness. Ready for any situation.

The Umibelt itself sports a timeless appearance, with a modular design allowing for easy mix and match between four classic belt styles and two beautiful buckles.

The belts range from full grade black or brown leather, to a durable, military-style canvas or, a reversible design made from high-quality stitched leather, in coffee and classic black. The leathers are full grain, with a slight vintage feel given from the hint of leather patina and subtle marbling.

Aesthetics haven’t been overlooked in the buckle either, which fuses form and function in a choice of two stunning finishes; black oxide and silver. Both have been meticulously ergonomically designed, so the buckle holds the Leatherman in a horizontal position, for all intents and purposes part of the belt itself.

Clever, sleek and a fusion of British-American ingenuity, the Umibelt is as at home in the boardroom as it is on the job site or camp ground. The buckle will fit six of the most popular Leatherman tools; Wave, Surge, Skeletool, Sidekick, Wingman and Charge, with additional designs to be added following the conclusion of the Umibelt’s Kickstarter campaign, which goes live today. Belts are available in sizes S to XXXL

As part of the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, Umibelt has also created a number of ingenious accessories, including a CNC machined aluminium storage shelf designed to hold two buckles, four belts and a number of Leatherman tools.

Designer Craig McCormack said, “We’ve been rigorously testing our design for four months and gathering feedback from users who have been wearing the Umibelt for work, leisure and during their weekend adventures. The feedback so far has been incredible and we’re absolutely confident that we have created a beautiful, high-quality and innovative solution that will last and last, finally uniting the Leatherman and belt as one and making it a part of the everyday whether the wearer is matching with smart, urban or leisure apparel.

“We have our own manufacturing facility and have bought in additional support from an established UK manufacturer, to ensure the belt can be produced quickly, and to the highest standards. The launch of our Kickstarter campaign marks an important milestone for us – we’ve created some great rewards for backers and are excited to share how pledges will help fund the next stage of our journey. “
