Consortiq Flies onto the Battlefront with Transformers 5
As one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year, Transformers 5 is set to capture the imagination of moviegoers all over the world. But one company that is celebrating the release for a different reason is drone expert, Consortiq.
As one of the most well-respected drone operators in the world, Consortiq was commissioned to qualify the drone pilot working on the action picture, and provide a complete consultative package that enabled the production team to get those ‘money shots’ without any of the hard work.
Director, Michael Bay, who is known for producing big-budget action flicks, always works with the same Swiss drone pilot, Dionys Frei. Requiring a PfCO to fly in the UK, Consortiq was approached by the film’s production company to deliver in time for this incredible project. However, as with every large production, there were hurdles!
Speaking about the experience, Ben Keene, Chief Business Development Officer said, “Film and TV have always been at the forefront of the drone industry, creating incredible pictures that truly stand out. We are incredibly proud to have been part of this picture, helping to bring it to life – we can’t wait to see it on the big screen.”
“Our courses, which can be completed in just three days, are perfect for this type of project as they provide pilots with the skills and qualifications needed when time isn’t on our side.”
A few days into training, the Consortiq team realised the whole process was not going to be completed in time for Dionys to gain his own UK Permission for Commercial Operation (PfCO) in-line with the production schedule. Therefore, to ensure the show could go on, the consultants got him through the training to the point where he achieved an Unmanned Aircraft Qualification (UAQ) which enabled him to fly under the PfCO of Consortiq’s operational arm, Cloud 12.
As a result of Dionys’ named pilot status, Cloud 12 provided aerial filming experts to oversee each UK drone flight. Cloud 12 also provided consultants to deliver permissions for flights at numerous locations around the country. Operating as an extension of the team, the Cloud 12 experts removed all the headaches regarding drone flights and handled everything from supplying the operations to gaining permissions.
“Some were technically difficult to achieve, with multiple stakeholders and lots of experience required to turn these permissions around in short order,” added Keene. “But as all Consortiq and Cloud 12 consultants have many years of experience with commercial drone flights in the UK, and abroad, the team managed to pull it back and create a seamless transition in the background with no fuss for the client.”
