Cosmetics Manufacturer Encourages Brands to Take Menopausal Skincare Seriously

Adonis, a US-based cosmetics manufacturer, is calling for more brands to tailor products to suit menopausal women’s skin, as the changing needs of aging women have been often ignored.

As menopause triggers a decrease in estrogen levels, this has repercussions on women’s bodies. This includes their largest organ: the skin. A decrease in collagen production results in thinner, looser skin with more lines and wrinkles. The skin grows dry and sunspots may appear, as well as acne – to the surprise of women who thought they had left that problem behind with adolescence.

Adonis spokesperson Ann Wilson said: “Skin changes as women age, and so do their skincare needs. With so much of this industry focused on young people, we’d like to encourage more brands to take skincare in menopausal women more seriously, with more products tailored to meet their needs.”

A good skincare routine is essential to look after one’s skin after menopause. Cleansing with products that are formulated for dry skin, and making sure to keep it hydrated, will go a long way to maintain healthy skin. Protecting one’s skin from external factors as well as hormonal change is important, and the use of sunscreen is highly recommended.

When it comes to care for menopausal skin, there are several ingredients that experts recommend. Retinol is one of the best-known skin care ingredients, known to reduce lines, wrinkles, and large pores; peptides, or polypeptides, are amino acids that occur naturally in skin and that can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Creams containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides are ideal to help menopausal skin retain moisture.

“Women do age – there is no reason to pretend otherwise. We firmly believe there should be more products tailored for the skin of menopausal women,” Adonis spokesperson Ann Wilson added. “With the hormonal changes they experience, a little extra help to protect their skin is needed. We are calling on brands to step up and provide that help.”
