Do Men And Women Negotiate Differently? New Global Research Suggests The Answer Is Definitively “Yes”.

The Gap Partnership believe that negotiation success hinges upon the ability of the negotiator to understand the other party, and in order to negotiate successfully, one must do so from inside the other party’s head.

But how do we gain a better understanding of the counterparty? What conscious or unconscious bias do we experience about ourselves and towards others, especially where gender is concerned? Does gender impact the way we behave or that others behave towards us? Does it bring to the table conscious bias or unconscious bias that give one or the other party an advantage?

For over 20 years The Gap Partnership has been helping clients with their complex negotiations, and are often asked about the role that gender plays. Many clients have said anecdotally they believe there are differences in the way the genders negotiate. There is also academic research that has concluded this to be true.

In December 2019, a global research study was conducted by The Gap Partnership on the topic of gender and negotiation. Professional women and men from around the world shared their thoughts and feelings on negotiation, with 1,213 survey respondents and additional qualitative interviews. The results provide rich insight and a deep understanding of gender difference that can help professionals adapt their own behaviour and anticipate that of their counterparty in order to get to better agreements.
