After the success of their June event, Repair Café is back again in Lambeth to host another community-led initiative focussed on promoting sustainability. In this upcoming event, Repair Café is inviting individuals with broken items to visit the café and get their items repaired for free at We Are 336, 336 Brixton Road, London SW9 7AA between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm on Saturday, 01 July.
The success of the pilot event has been a testament to the positive impact the Repair Café has had on the local community and was attended by over 100 people. During the event, the team at Repair Café was able to fix 94% of the broken items that came through the door. This totalled a massive 44kg of waste that was saved from landfill and resulted in the prevention of 453 Co2 emissions – which, to put it in perspective, is equivalent to the same amount of emissions produced by a television running non-stop for 785 days.
Local residents are able to bring along anything that is broken to the upcoming event, including electronic items, clothing, furniture, and more without any prior appointment necessary. In-house experts will assess the amount of damage and make any repairs accordingly. As the community initiative has shown, there isn’t much that the repair experts aren’t able to fix.
Repair Café Lambeth isn’t an isolated initiative, it’s part of a larger worldwide network of over 2,500 Repair Cafés that are making a big impact in their respective local communities. Through the work they’re doing, not only are they helping people to save money and resources but are also saving the environment – one repair at a time.
“We couldn’t believe the response to our first free repair event,” says Olga Osuch, spokesperson for the event. “As soon as we finished our June event, we got straight back into planning for the next one and we’re so excited to invite local residents back to our café again. Working as a community is something we’re really passionate about, it’s all about giving back and doing good for the people that surround us. We hope that during our next event, we’ll be able to come together, carry out plenty of repairs, and be a positive space for community members.”
