HSE figures on workplace lifting and carrying injuries could be reduced says Midland Pallet Trucks

According to the latest statistics released by the Health and Safety Executive for 2017/2018, UK workers have suffered over half a million non-fatal injuries with 21% of these being caused by incorrect handling, lifting or carrying.

With an estimated 75% of those injuries resulting in an absence from work of up to seven days, Midland Pallet Trucks says UK employers need to consider the materials handling equipment provided to workers and identify why avoidable handling, lifting and carrying injuries are occurring in the workplace.

Based in the West Midlands, Midland Pallet Trucks are materials handling experts and stock a wide range of high-quality hand pallet trucks, scissor lifting tables and sack trucks along with other equipment which can safeguard employees against the risk of workplace injury as a result of heavy lifting.

The number of days lost due to non-fatal injury is reported to have cost the UK economy £5.2bn in lost productivity over the past two years. The HSE report shows that this equates to £8,400 per non-fatal injury, which can have a significantly detrimental effect on the bottom line of any business.

Midland Pallet Trucks has earned a reputation for selling high-quality products at very competitive prices to businesses throughout the UK and has recently launched a budget line to help smaller companies such as garages provide their workers with a pallet truck or lifting table for use in their storerooms.

Phil Chesworth, Managing Director of Midland Pallet Trucks said “The recent figures on workplace injuries show that the number of lost days in productivity has stagnated where it should have improved. It is up to employers to provide their workers with the proper equipment to complete tasks that include handling, lifting and carrying safely. With so many injuries attributed to what should be avoidable issues, we’d strongly urge all workplaces to audit their processes and determine where additional support and specialist materials handling equipment is required to ensure a safer, healthier and productive environment.”
