Koua Studio’s Sustainable Fabrics Star in Disney+ Series ‘The Acolyte’

London-based bespoke, handmade textile brand KOUA STUDIO – which champions artisan textiles from founder Erika Alvarez’s native Mexico – is delighted to announce that its sustainable fabrics have been featured in the highly anticipated Disney+ series, ‘The Acolyte’.

Set in the Star Wars universe during the High Republic era, ‘The Acolyte’ showcases the prime of the Jedi Order and brings to life a period rich in lore and tradition, making it a perfect match for KOUA STUDIO’s beautifully detailed, richly vibrant fabrics.

KOUA STUDIO provided fabrics from both their organic and recycled lines for some of the series’ intricate costumes. Both lines are handmade by skilled artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico, blending generations of tradition with sustainability.

The organic line, known for its natural fibres and dyes, includes materials coloured with indigo, cochineal, and marigold. These fabrics are woven using a pedal loom, an ancestral technique that has been passed down through the years, ensuring that each piece is unique and crafted with utmost care.

The recycled line, comprising textiles made from 50% recycled cotton and 50% recycled polyester, is also woven on a pedal loom, ensuring no energy consumption during the weaving process.

Erika Alvarez, CEO and founder of KOUA STUDIO said, “I feel incredibly proud to see our fabrics on the big screen portraying the art and quality of our fabrics. More than ever, Mexico needs to be seen and our art needs to be appreciated, generating jobs in local towns and providing access to education. I believe that is the core of real change in my country and something I continue to work towards with my team in London.”

Founded in 2021 in the UK capital, KOUA STUDIO is dedicated to sustainability and craftsmanship. The textile house’s mission is to produce high-quality fabrics that not only meet the needs of fashion and interior designers but also the film and theatre industry to keep contributing positively to social and environmental change.

By integrating creativity, innovation, technology, and tradition, KOUA STUDIO helps designers become greener and promotes transparency in the production process. This approach not only supports the environment but also provides economic opportunities for often forgotten or overlooked artisans in local Mexican towns.

The inclusion of KOUA STUDIO’s fabrics in ‘The Acolyte’ is the company’s latest success, and proof of the growing recognition of the importance of sustainable and ethically produced materials in the entertainment industry – particularly from powerhouses such as Disney.

As the series transports viewers to a galaxy far, far away, its costumes also bring attention to the rich cultural heritage and artisanal craftsmanship on our own planet – namely in Oaxaca, Mexico. KOUA STUDIO is honoured to be part of this exciting project, contributing to the visual storytelling of the iconic universe while championing sustainability and ethical production practices.
