Life-threatening Asthma Attacks on the Rise Throughout UK As The Essential Guide to Asthma is Published for Sufferers

There are roughly 5.4 million people across the UK living with asthma and the rate of one in every 11 people diagnosed with the condition is steadily on the rise. According to Asthma UK, every 10 seconds a person in the UK suffers an asthma attack; an attack which could prove deadly.

It is reported that each day three families suffer the loss of a loved one to an asthma attack, making it one of the most deadly conditions in the UK. The rate of deaths caused by asthma attacks in the UK is 50% higher than the EU average and has got 20% worse in the last five years alone.

Reports have suggested that two thirds of all asthma deaths could have been prevented, leading to much speculation as to the cause. Experts suggest that an awareness of the seriousness of the condition is to blame, which is why Need 2 Know Books has recently released a self-help guide entitled: The Essential Guide to Asthma.

Robert Duffy, Series Editor of Need 2 Know Books said: “Poor NHS funding could also be to blame; in both raising awareness of the harmful effects of asthma as well as treating conditions as they arise. A tragic example of this is the death in 2013 of nine-year-old Ella Kissi-Debrah, whose asthma hospital admissions can be linked directly to spikes in illegal levels of air pollution.

“Better treatment and a more heightened awareness on the devastating effect air pollution has on the health of young people suffering from asthma meant that this tragic loss could have been avoided. An inquest from the University of Southampton’s professor of immunopharmacology, Stephen Holgate states there was a “real prospect that without illegal levels of air pollution Ella would not have died.”

Air pollution is certainly a rising problem for the UK; areas with high levels of traffic are consistently found to be well above the legal limit of 40 µg/m3. The Guardian reports that “The government has been breaching the law since 2010 by failing to put in place plans to reduce air pollution and reduce the public’s exposure to it.”

Asthma UK has also reported that around two thirds of people with asthma suggest that poor air quality exacerbates their condition, making potentially life-threatening attacks more frequent and severe. It’s clear that without better education and stricter environmental controls, these attacks will continue to rise.
