But as reports suggest that there were 292 fines issued during last year, with more than £61m paid out in total, the company suggests that not enough is being done to tackle workplace accidents and keep employees safe.

Speaking about the issue, Managing Director of Midland Pallet Trucks, Phil Chesworth, said, “Health and safety should be the most important thing to as business, but often, with such busy working environments and tight budgets, this can take a backseat. However as the tougher rules are now in place to protect employees, business owners and managers must put an emphasis on this to avoid costly and potentially life-changing accidents.”

The figures, released by law firm, BLM, said this rise highlights a 148% increase since 2015. The average cost of a fine rose from £69,500 to £211,000 over the last 12 months, as a result of new, harsher rules, which are designed to protect both parties.

The new fines mean that businesses with a turnover of more than £50m could be liable for costs of £10m for health and safety offences, and £20m for corporate manslaughter. Causing potentially detrimental side effects, these steep fines are the highest they have ever been, and are set to only increase should unavoidable accidents still occur regularly.
