Modern PPE Needs to Reflect Workforce to Provide Maximum Protection

The modern workforce is changing, and PPE needs to evolve to reflect this, says expert Skanwear. With arc and fire resistant PPE playing a critical role in reducing incidents of injury and death, businesses need to take a more proactive role in managing and updating their PPE to ensure that maximum protection is given to each employee.

Angus Long, Managing Director of Skanwear, said, “From engineering to construction, the workforce has never looked more diverse. Today, women are entering professions where PPE is required in ever larger numbers and there is a huge array of sizes. It’s a positive step for businesses and means they get to pick out the right candidates for them based on experience and talent. However, it does present challenges when it comes to PPE.

“Arc & flame resistant PPE needs to properly fit in order to deliver the level of protection it’s been designed for. Ill-fitting garments can, for example, leave flesh exposed or mean that workers discard the essential equipment because it’s uncomfortable. Not having PPE that reflect the workforce places employees at risk and, as a result, should be considered a top priority for any firm where staff may be exposed to arc flash, fire, or chemicals.”

Skanwear has a long history of manufacturing and delivering high-quality PPE, including a tailored option. In 2015, it began stocking STRATA® Protection, which offers dedicated ladieswear to suit female body types and complement the size selection it already had on offer, ranging from S to 4XL in its standard garments, and bespoke service solutions if applicable.

Angus continued, “When it’s first considered, it can seem like a challenge to ensure that each person always has the right size PPE for the job they’re doing and that it’s changed as regularly as necessary. But it doesn’t have to be. Our Safeline platform, makes it simple for either workers to log in and select garments from a list of pre-selected products and place an order that’s deducted from their allowance, anytime, and delivered anywhere.

“For businesses that are committed to maximising safety, putting a modern PPE solution that reflects their dynamic workforce in place should be considered critical.”
