New acting skills courses offer career development and transferable skills for busy professionals

A series of new courses launched by training group Acting for Lawyers & Professionals (AFL & PROF) is seeking to equip business people with skills gleaned from the world of theatre. The courses, developed specially to help lawyers and other professionals, offer to develop and enhance participant’s skills in key areas such as presentation.

Using a range of practical and creative activities and games, the courses encourage students to think outside the box and promise to equip them with the talents they need to face communication challenges with a newfound ease.

These courses are suited not only to those in the law profession, but the business world as a whole – where communicating clearly and effectively is often paramount to persuading clients and striking deals.

Though drawing on theatre-inspired learning, the Acting for Lawyers course doesn’t require participants to be thespians – but instead focuses on building core strengths such as how to use tone of voice to convey meaning and sound more persuasive and influential, the role of adrenaline in performance, and how using gestures can help convince audiences more effectively.

Acting skills are highly transferable, and ideal for aiding in career development. The new courses are also the first of their kind in the UK, catering to the unique needs of the law and professional sector. This helps AFL & PROF stand out from the crowd, as a training provider like no other.

“I created these courses during my time at private law school, and also bring my own experience from the world of theatre to the initiative,” says Elisa Kamsky, Founder of AFL & PROF and the London Lawyers Drama Society. “As the arts experience increasing cuts, with these courses I’m helping prove how important creativity is, not only in the creative industries but in the world of business as well.”

AFL & PROF is going to undergo big changes in 2019, with plans to stage a play with students and raise money for Legal Aid – helping the arts and the legal industries lend one another a crucial helping hand.
