Raw Labels offers another safeguard for ‘wandering’ children with autism

Raw Labels, the manufacturer of labels and wristbands for kids, is providing another safeguarding tool to help parents with children on the autism spectrum to stay safe.

Studies have shown that some children with autism have a ‘wandering’ impulse that means that they can disappear from sight in supermarkets, at parks or in any other public space leading their parents to panic and worry for their wellbeing and safety.

As children get older, they learn how to unlock doors and garden gates, and with parents unable to keep watch over them every second of the day, it may be some minutes before their absence is realised and a search undertaken to locate them and bring them safely home.

According to a major online study undertaken by the Interactive Autism Network, over 50% of parents with children diagnosed with an ASD are prone to such wanderings, especially between the ages of four and ten.

A third of parents also reported ‘close calls’ with road traffic accidents and drowning following their child’s wandering with over 50% of respondents saying that their child was missing long enough to be reported to police.

The behaviour seems to peek at age four, which is a worrying statistic for parents, especially as the majority of children of this age are unable to effectively communicate their name, address and telephone number to adults who may come across them.

With this in mind, Raw Labels is urging parents with children on the autism spectrum to add another safeguard to help protect them should their wandering impulse kick in. The company’s reusable ID wristbands for kids are colourful, hardwearing and carry the child’s name and parent telephone number so that they can be alerted as soon as their child is found.

Sven Miller from Raw Labels said “With children on the autism spectrum four times more likely to wander off than their unaffected siblings, it’s essential that parents make the most of every possible safeguard to get their child returned to them as soon as possible.

“Our vibrant wristbands come in an array of cute designs and colours that children enjoy, plus they’re made with soft plastic that is totally waterproof and comfortable to wear making them a resilient and practical product for greater peace of mind.”
