Repair Café Lambeth Appeals For More Volunteer Fixers After Successfully Repairing 94% of Items

Repair Café Lambeth, which provides free repair services for broken items such as appliances, kids toys and clothes, is calling for volunteers with a knack for fixing common household items after seeing record demand for its services this summer.

The community-led initiative has fixed over 94% of all items brought through its door since opening in June, including wonky suitcases, broken laptops, silent radios, unusable lawn mowers and damaged dresses. It expects demand for its services to increase even further this winter and is appealing for handy locals to volunteer their repair skills so no-one in need of a repair is turned away.

Eoin Heffernan, Repair Café Lambeth CIC said, “We are delighted to have welcomed so many people to Repair Café Lambeth so far and humbled by the commitment of our volunteers and their amazing repair expertise and skills.“Due to the cost of living crisis, we are seeing more and more people come to our events with nowhere else to go to get their items fixed. These are often important items such as phones, clothes and children’s toys which can make such a difference to local families.

“We want to meet the demand and need in Lambeth as the winter nears and the cost of living crisis worsens. We want to be able to help repair more electrical items, particularly heaters and textiles such as coats and duvets. We need more amazing fixer volunteers to help us meet our aims of waste reduction and join us to share their skills and bring the community together.”

Repair Café Lambeth is held on the first Saturday of each month at 336 in 336 Brixton Road. The free events bring together neighbours from across the community, with volunteers donating their time and repair skills to bring broken items back to life over a cuppa and slice of cake. As part of its efforts to promote the circular economy, Repair Café Lambeth also provides recycling and reuse advice for any item that is beyond repair.

Along with its commitment to helping residents repair their broken essentials and stay warm this winter, Repair Café Lambeth is keen to share its expertise with local businesses and help them to meet their ESG and sustainability goals.
