Sustainability Pressure in Beauty Industry Rising Fast, Says Packaging Leader

Following international awareness campaigns highlighting the environmental impact of single use plastics, many organizations are beginning to reduce their plastic consumption. However, one packaging manufacturer has noted that the beauty industry especially appears to be under mounting pressure to implement change, with rising demand from end users for eco-friendly bottles, jars and containers for cosmetics products.

APG Packaging, a market leader in providing sustainable packaging solutions to help the world’s leading brands achieve their sustainability goals, has noted a significant increase in demand for responsible packaging, launching a number of new designs to ensure that the beauty industry can continue to meet consumer needs within an evolving New Plastics Economy landscape.

APG Packaging believes that the New Plastics Economy – a joint initiative from the UN Environment and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation – is a driving force behind this growing pressure to move towards more sustainable packaging. Today, the campaign is supported by more than 400 organizations, including notable beauty brands like Unilever and L’Oreal.

Armin Arminak, EVP of R&D at APG Packaging said, “The beauty industry has pressure mounting from both sides. Not only are brands seeing rising demand for sustainability from their consumers, but they’re also under pressure to maintain an industry-wide reputation at a time when big name brands are participating in campaigns such as the New Plastics Economy.

“It’s believed that around one third of all plastic packaging will never be able to be recycled unless real change is made, and we’re proud to be a pioneering packaging leader driving this change through innovative design.”

One of the latest designs introduced by APG Packaging is a patented, fully recyclable, all plastic infinity pump for use in personal care applications such as soaps, lotions, and shampoos. Meeting the criteria set out in the APR Design Guide for Plastics Recyclability published by the Association of Plastic Recyclers, products such as this can help beauty brands to handle the increasing pressure that they are under to become more eco-friendly.

APG Packaging has long been committed to reducing single use plastics throughout the multiple sectors they cater for. Leaders in the use of responsible materials and strategic design, the manufacturer creates market-ready packaging using plant fibers such as bamboo, 100% sustainable paper, and PCR plastics made from recycled PET bottles and other items.
