The Piano Shop Bath to Lauch ‘Played & Remade’ creative Showcase on 01 May

Continuing its tradition of creative, inspiring collaborations, the esteemed Piano Shop Bath will launch its most ambitious and thought-provoking exhibition yet this spring. ‘Played & Remade’ is a curated collection of striking art works, each crafted by a skilled artist using parts and materials from the more than 350 unwanted and broken pianos that pass through The Piano Shop Bath’s doors each year.

The exhibition, which is the brainchild of Piano Shop Bath owner, Jon Kelly will continually evolve, with new works by artists added as additional unwanted pianos find their way into artist studios and workshops over the coming months.

The permanent showcase launches on 01 May with a curated collection of sculptured artworks, each crafted from recycled piano parts. Each unique piece will be for sale online, in addition to being displayed within The Piano Shop Bath’s showroom in the city centre.

Jon said, “We receive around 350 requests per year to dispose of unwanted and unfixable pianos. Each of these instruments contains valuable materials, such as native and exotic woods, piano keys, cast iron, brass, felt, copper, and steel wires. Simply scrapping them is a significant waste of resources and craftsmanship but, knowing what to do with that stream of old, unwanted pianos is a major issue for the piano trade and for the piano owners themselves.

“Played and Remade is our creative and collaborative solution designed to address and resolve this problem. It enables skilled artists to make something magical and new, while also giving the public the chance to admire or own eco-friendly pieces.”

Among the artists contributing to the first showcase are Clare Burnett, ex-President of the Royal Society of Sculptors; illustrator Andy Council; The Piano Shop’s own artist and piano technician Marc Hackworthy; Marlborough-based artist and educator, Julieann Worrall Hood; and Victoria Topping, whose work blends digital and traditional techniques.

Jon adds, “We have great confidence in our solution to recycling this waste material. It’s lovely working with creatives and having these artists endorse our vision. These pianos all tell a story; let’s keep that storytelling alive, breathing new life into these old component parts; it’s a natural marriage transforming Music into art.”

Played and Remade can be viewed from 01 May, Monday – Saturday from 10am to 5pm at The Piano Shop Bath (1&2 Canton Place, Bath, BA1 6AA.)
